President's Message

Hello all,

I hope the new year finds you in good health and spirit! Lots of plans are in the making for the next couple of months, so be sure to come out.

The Freeze for Food is set for January 25th. Volunteers are needed, call Peter Joyce at (608) 245-0626 if you are interested. If you are not volunteering, come out and run! Registration for the runs start at 11:15 am. The 5K run starts at 12 noon (sharp!) and the 10K run at 1 pm (sharp!). Funds raised benefit the Columbia Support Network.

is February 28th this year. This is a great time to share your Peace Corps experience with others. Marc Brand is calling for volunteers who would like to give a short presentation on their PC experience to his East High School classes. Give him a call at 255-1339.

See you soon! Peace,

Steven Elmore (President, RPCVs of Wisconsin - Madison)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our courageous leader Rochelle Goedken has agreed to help get out the 2004 calendar but by next year she will be DONE as Calendar Committee Chair, and we will need someone to fill her shoes.  Could that formidable person be YOU?

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be February 26, and from now on calendar meetings will be the fourth Tuesday of each month.  The dates for viewing slides for the calendar should appear elsewhere in this month's newsletter.

Calendar Committee Meeting Minutes
-submitted by Jenny Guerne

Thank you to Troy Rutter, Rochelle Goedken, Kristy Torres, Richard & Julita Zolnik, Lee & Rick Row, Prudence Barber, Jenny Guerne and Margot Kennard for attending the December calendar meeting.

Marketing & Distribution:  We have sold 31,162 out of 37,500 calendars, which is really good.  We are hoping that we will run out of calendars soon.  Alan is requesting that when someone has an urgent order that they only send ONE email to him.  If it is urgent, they can also call and leave a message.  RoseAnn pointed out that orders MUST go through Richard and Julita, so no one else should be emailing their orders to Alan.  This prevents duplication and reduces confusion.  Richard and Julita remarked that they would like to know when and order gets shipped.  Bar code scanners in retail stores are still scanning calendar prices at $10.95 even though they are marked at 12.95; we need to match the bar code to the marked price.  We have sold about 5000 more calendars than we had at the same time in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Production:  The deadline for slide submission is 12/31/02.  We need to get a quote from Strauss printing, and to ensure

that the quote includes the cost of shingling since this was an additional cost last year.  We decided that it would be a good idea to try to have the first calendar slide show at January's general meeting, because if we wait until February we wouldn't have the first viewing until 2/19.  That is too late.  If there is no national conference for us to do next year, we won't be in as much of a rush to get the calendars printed by July.  It was suggested that we have a showing at the beginning of February, and then a second showing at the meeting that month, but there were concerns about the quality of the screen/surface we would be seeing the large number of slides on if the first showing were not in a place equipped with a screen.

It was decided at November's meeting on Day block information that Buck will continue to do all movable and changeable dates, Beth Chance will do the words of the month, and Ron Chance will do the country paragraph.  We still need someone to work on the inside back cover, back cover and second to last page; Buck will keep doing the new moons, full moons and holy days on other calendars.  This is all very important, and Rochelle

will try to write up a brief job description telling what doing each of these pages entails so that volunteers can have an idea what they would be doing if they work on this.  Doing the rest of the work that Buck has done (the individual Day Block information) is now a matter of trying to update from DOS to a newer format.  We need to find a computer that can read double density disks so we can change the info onto high density disks.  At some point in January, we will need a work group that can go through all this stuff to identify what needs to be reformatted.

We need to update our systems and software more frequently, because RoseAnn is trying to move the database from the old computer to the new one and having trouble getting the old one to communicate with the new one.

RoseAnn also went through how many calendars different people have to account for--she turned in all her sales to Richard and Julita, so now they're accounted for.  It's really important that they know where a delivery is from when it is from a private home and not from Wieners.  Please keep track of sales!
