PEACE CORPS: Still Aiming High After 65 Years

Sixty-five years ago, in 1961, President John F. Kennedy signed an Executive Order establishing Peace Corps, to promote world peace and friendship through voluntary service overseas. His challenge to Americans: Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.

But it was Founding Director of Peace Corps Sargent Shriver who made sure the program was a success. With Peace Corps's first goal in mind—helping those in interested countries meet their need for trained men and women—Shriver met with dignitaries around the world to learn how Peace Corps could meet their needs. He also
visited Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) in the field—from high in the Himalayas to the deserts of Africa—where PCVs were digging wells and latrines, carrying out forestry and agricultural projects, or working in maternity clinics and schools. Shriver dedicated himself to the mission of Peace Corps to promote peace by building connections and bringing people together. Today, 65 years later, Peace Corps is still dedicated to the ideals of friendship and peace through service.
Since 1988, The International Calendar Project has fulfilled another Peace Corps goal: promoting a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. In its dedication to Peace Corps ideals, the International Calendar and the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Wisconsin-Madison, publishers of the calendar, celebrate the countries where volunteers have served. The funds raised from calendar sales support development projects at home and abroad. When you purchase this calendar, you too support this important work and are part of the 65 years of Peace Corps.
