Third Goal

What is the Third Goal?

Beginning in 1961, volunteers have gone into many parts of the world to donate their time and skills, with the overall mission to promote world peace and friendship. President John F. Kennedy stated that the third goal of the Peace Corps is to “strengthen Americans’ understanding about the world and its peoples.” Upon their return, volunteers have brought what they learned back to this country, formally known as the Third Goal.

THE THREE GOALS OF PEACE CORPS

  1. Help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained man and women.
  2. Help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
  3. Help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
