Zanzibar, Tanzania: Every day at low tide, groups of women set forth from Zanzibar’s Stone Town beaches, bound for the exposed coral reefs of the Pemba Channel, in search of mollusks and other tidal treasures to eat and sell. With the return of the high tide, the women—now far from shore and waist-deep in the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean—are picked up by boat to return to their villages.
