Mozambique

Galimotos, a word borrowed from Malawi for small vehicles fashioned from wire, cans, and various found objects, can be found across much of southern Africa and in isolated areas from Jordan to Malawi to Indonesia to Pakistan-and also here, on a small and sparsely-populated island in Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago. While parents catch and dry anchovies to sell on the mainland, the inventive minds and capable hands of the island's children combine to create complicated push cars from recycled items-to play with themselves or to sell to tourists.

Go Tell the Crocodiles: Chasing Prosperity in Mozambique
By Rowan Moore Gerey

2018

Summary:

Mozambique had dizzying economic growth starting in the mid-1990s, about 20 years after its independence from Portugal (corresponding with the collapse of apartheid in neighboring South Africa. It was among the fastest-growing economies on the planet. But most Mozambicans have little to show for the long boom. This narrative nonfiction, based on a series of interviews, explores the efforts of ordinary people to provide for themselves where foreign aid, the formal economy, and the government have fallen short. It is the story of contemporary Mozambique through the heartbreaking and fascinating lives of real people, from a street kid who flouts Mozambique's child labor laws to make his living selling muffins, to a riverside community that has lost dozens of people to crocodile attacks. Mozambique continues to come to grips with a long civil war and the legacy of colonialism even as it wrestles with the toll of infectious disease and a wave of refugees. The story is a microcosm of the challenges facing countries across Africa. Readers who appreciated Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers will appreciate this story and how it is told.
