Picnics are a familiar sight under Mostar's famous 16th-century Ottoman bridge. Mostar has long been known for its old Turkish houses and the Old Bridge—Stari Most—from which the town takes its name. The scene along the Neretva River is idyllic today, but this mixed Christian-Muslim town was synonymous with conflict during the Bosnian War of the early 1990s, including in 1995, when the historic bridge was destroyed. It was rebuilt in 2004 and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Adult Books

Buffalos by My Bedroom
By Dennis Herlocker

2009

Summary:

The author was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania from 1964 to 1967. He never thought he would meet lions by night, find buffaloes by his bedroom, woo a pretty girl from Philadelphia on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, or work with such a surprising bunch of associates from different national and ethnic groups. Joining the Peace Corps changed his life. With a wonderful sense of place, intricate descriptions of the Tanzanians he lived and worked with, expressive language, and a true writing skill, Dennis gives fine-grained detail about his three years in Tanganyika’s world-famous Ngorongoro Conservation Area. African wildlife conservation depends on the well-being and goodwill of African communities. In support of local development, a portion of earnings from the book sales go to support local community development projects.
