Calendar 2021
Help us celebrate Peace Corps’ 60th anniversary in 2021! Since Peace Corps was established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, volunteers have fanned out across the globe to serve in 142 countries. Now, with all volunteers temporarily evacuated and recalled home due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it is especially critical to call attention to and support the important work that Peace Corps Volunteers do worldwide.
The 2021 International Calendar is a look at 13 of the 142 countries where Peace Corps Volunteers have served since 1961. In addition to Namibia, Guatemala, India, Ghana, MYanmar, Colombia, Peru, Rwanda, South Africa, and Russia, for the first time Chad and Costa Rica are featured. The 2021 cover photo—of four friends taking a break from working on their families’ terrace farms—was taken in the high Himalaya Mountains of Nepal.
Our calendar researchers consult solar, lunar, and astronomical calendars to determine the dates of important events each year. Do you want to know when solar eclipses or meteor showers will occur in 2021? Or on what day in August the Green Corn Moon will be full? From religious high holy days to important civic dates to annual local market days, you’ll find much to inform and entertain you.
Along with photos and demographic information about each featured country, there are lists of suggested recipes to try and music, films, and books to explore. For a list of current and past suggestions, just click on the “Cultural Resources” button or check out our “Educator Resources.”
